By increasing boost (within reason), more air will be forced into the engine, so more fuel can be added to increase the engine?s power output. The general rule is that if you add more boost and have an engine tailored to your needs, you?ll get more power. It is possible for turbos or engines to fail if the boost is too high.

What Happens If You Over Boost?
When the turbocharger runs at a higher pressure (more air is sucked into the engine) than it would on a constant basis, it is overboost. Overboost usually lasts for 10-20 seconds, and the result is a 10% increase in power, on average, during that time.

How Much Is Too Much Boost?
It is probably best to increase the boost by 5 pounds over stock if you have a stock engine with a compressor that is set to produce no more than twenty pounds of boost.

Is Over Boosting Bad?
There are two major problems with too much boost (overboost): Lean is bad: If you have too little fuel for too much air, you have a lean state.

How Much Boost Can An Engine Handle?
When an engine is close to stock, dialing in boost to 9 pounds is generally considered to be the upper end of the safe range.

What Does Over Boosting Feel Like?
When you hit overboost, your engine feels like it has no fuel for a second. Bucking wouldn?t be a good word for it. I feel like I?m hitting a govener when I do this. In my opinion, if the car hits overboost more than once in a few seconds, it can be quite violent.

Can A Turbo Over Boost?
Overboosting the engine can cause serious damage to the internal components and even complete engine failure if the turbo continues to overspeed.

What Can Cause A Turbo To Overboost?
A damaged or stuck turbo charger or supercharger wastegate can cause damage.
A wastegate control valve that sticks.
A blocked wastegate control hose prevents boost pressure from being relived quickly enough, thus preventing wastegate control hose, keeping boost pressure from being relived quickly enough.
A faulty turbo charger boost sensor or actuator can cause the charger to malfunction.

Is Too Much Boost Bad?
You might want to avoid boosting your car too much if it doesn?t run on special effects. Blow a head gasket, blow the limits of your fuel system, or blow the air out of your engine so much that you lose power.

What Causes Too Much Boost?
When the turbo charger is overcharged, the engine runs at a high pressure because it is forcing more air into the engine than it normally would. Over boost is not controlled by the driver. It occurs automatically when the vehicle is driven in a certain gear, with the throttle fully open, and the driver cannot initiate or control it manually.

What Is A Lot Of Boost?
Boost can be run as much as the tune allows. The majority of the time here consider 15-18lbs low boost and anything over 26psi high boost, but if the tune is off, you can damage the motor at any boost level.

How Bad Is Over Boosting?
When you boost your engine, you get more power because you get more fuel and air. However, if you cram too much air into the engine, it will ignite too quickly.

What Could Cause An Overboost?
There are possible causes of damaged or stuck turbo chargers or supercharger wastegates.

Can A Stock Engine Handle A Turbo?
You can significantly increase the horsepower of your car?s stock engine by tuning it. In the future, you may be able to use your stock engine for a turbo system, allowing you to maximize the potential of your engine.
